Six years ago the Giving Committee decided to replace the previous method of giving, which had been on an annual one off basis, with a strategy of donating a proportion of the total amount available (which is calculated from 10% of the church’s direct income for the previous year- the church‘s tithe) to charities/projects on a five year commitment basis as well as annual one off grants
It was also decided that the recipients of the donations in both groups should reflect a balance of local and national/international charities/projects.
The Charities/Projects in our current five year cycle are listed below, and more information about some of them can be found by clicking on the arrows on the right.

In addition to that which is within the purview of the Giving Committee the church gives money by way of special collections and in order to see the big picture set out below are the amounts the church has given so far this year and is likely to by the end of the year.

Our carol singing collection goes to The Children’s’ Society - last year £113.67
We usually donate the midnight mass collection to Crisis - last year it was £174.39.
Overall picture of the Church’s giving
Including our Five year commitments the total giving of the church for 2008 is likely to be in the region of £4145.
We have concluded that the balance of money (£1829) should be distributed as follows (below) taking into account the difficulties that Christian charities have in obtaining grants from secular organisations and projects whose purpose is to make a real difference to the lives of individuals.
Christian Blind Mission (£238)
CBM aims to provide medical care, education and rehabilitation to as many blind, low vision, deaf and physically disabled people as possible.
The Smile Train(£244)
This Charity focuses on operating on children who have cleft lip and palate problems and have provided free cleft surgery for over 250,000 children since March 2000. It costs an average of £122 to provide surgery for one child.
Nepal Charity (£238)
This is a charity that Jean Thompson has been to visit during her time with Christian Mission Society and we have supported before. It provides jobs for needy people (like three wheeler rickshaws). It provides literacy classes for women in the villages and brings people to Christ through their charity work.
Church Housing Trust(£237)
CHT provide action for homeless people.
Amongst other projects it has:- Women’s and Children’s Refuges, Supported accommodation for young people and Prison visitors centres
Opportunity International(£238)
This global charity provides micro finance as a solution to poverty by giving poor people access to basic financial services including small loans, savings, insurance and business training which would otherwise not be available.
Compassion UK(£216)
Fiona spoke of this charity’s work some weeks ago. It costs £18 per month to sponsor a child and we would hope to sponsor an older child in their last year of care.
NSPCC(£238)
Nationally known charity protecting vulnerable children.
